Clerkship Program

The program involves you taking the opportunity and making the commitment to work as a law clerk throughout the period of your academic legal training.  Working as a law clerk is the beginning of your development as a legal professional.  The demands of your academic training will be balanced by your commitment to what will be in effect full-time employment in our busy and diverse legal practice.  It is a big commitment, but one which when made and acted on with dedication is, in our experience, of great benefit to both you and us.

Subject to a trial period of three months, Heard McEwan Legal will employ you as a clerk for the period of your academic training, which will normally be about 5 years.  Clerkship ends at or around the time of graduation with the degree of Bachelor of Laws or at the completion of the Practical Legal Training course, whichever occurs later.

Many opportunities and benefits can come from working as a law clerk, including:

    • gaining the practical experience of the application of the law;

    • assisting our lawyers in working for clients on files;

    • working under the supervision of specialist lawyers and gaining the benefit of their experience and direction;

    • a modern, well-equipped office environment including access to legal resources and up-to-date technology;

    • the experience of working in different areas of law.  As far as possible, you will be given the opportunity to work in areas of law of interest to you.

During the clerkship period, for which a training program is developed, you will have the experience of learning about practice management and working in each of the two main streams of our practice:

    • Property and Commercial; and

    • Litigation.

We provide you with valuable feedback on your performance and offer the opportunity to discuss training and ongoing career development.
